This year has been about breaking our four walls and rethinking the traditional concept of what our home should look like. Just like DesignBound’s report on private residences throughout 2021, we see new work spaces, conscious renovations, and new demands for contact with nature. Although different in size and environment, our top 10 private homes all provide a way to break the norm in our way of life-from churches rebuilt in Spain to cantilevered tubular houses in Russia.

We continue to make an annual summary of this year's big story and look at the top 10 private houses and residences in the 2021 design boom.

In the lush green countryside of Aichi Prefecture, Japan, 1-1 architects designed a house for the owner of a tropical plant farm. Composed of three volumes under three roofs, the layout of "house OS" is designed according to the boundary line of adjacent land spanned by single-storey houses.

S-AR completed "casa cosmos", a small single-family house located near Puerto Escondido on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. The house is composed of three main elements: a concrete core that encloses the main living space; an external grid of beams and columns also made of concrete; and a roof, whose function is to overlook the landscape. The skin of the mechanical wooden lattice replaces most of the walls and windows, and strengthens the close connection between the house and the surrounding landscape.

Along a secluded cove on Serifos Island in Greece, Die Architects built its underground nCAVED house. Inserted into the edge of the cliff, the house seemed to hover on the sea. The design team introduced a refuge that is not affected by the strong north wind, while not obstructing the undulating landscape and broad horizon. Therefore, the house has no external form, but exists as a series of occupable volumes subtracted from the earth.

The relationship between the architect and the client can be a worrying experience, but when the two parties come together and work in harmony, it can lead to beautiful buildings and very happy end users. garmendia cordero arquitectos and customer tas careaga demonstrate this perfect balance. Together, they transformed an abandoned chapel in Sopuerta in northern Spain into a custom house, aptly called the "Tass Church".

mauricio ceballos x architects (MCXA) realized the "casa mague" in Marinalco, Mexico, whose design carefully considered nature and the pre-Hispanic history of the area. The venue was chosen by the client due to its unique microclimate and large trees, adjacent to the Cerro de losidolos (Idol Mountain), where the Aztecs carved a ceremonial center on the mountainside.

Architecture studio KRADS has completed a holiday house overlooking þingvallavatn, a large natural lake in southwest Iceland. The architect explained that the form of the building directly responds to the surrounding landscape. “In dialogue with the terrain, the concrete foundation of the wooden house is located on three staggered planes, following the movement of the landscape,” the company said. "In a similar way, the surface of the roof is covered with local grass and moss, partly sloped towards the hillside and partly sloped towards the hillside."

Located in the forest near Guadalajara, Mexico, the casa amapa designed by pérez gómez arquitectura is shaped into an abstract geometric residence with exposed materiality and harmoniously blending with the surrounding dense vegetation. The strategic positioning of the project is to keep the existing regional topography and woodland intact. The structure appears to appear in a remote place, using a minimalist approach to grow from the ground, triggering a frank dialogue between the artificial environment and the natural environment.

Designer sergey kuznetsov collaborated with KROST to design "Russian Typical", which is a suspended pipe-shaped residential project that reflects the surrounding landscape. At the archstoyanie festival held in the nikola-lenivets art park in the Kaluga region, the stainless steel-clad pavilion opened. The project forms a mature residential building with all modern conveniences in which people can live, cook, shower and sleep.

The "pink house" in Vietnam was designed by 23o5 studio, using simple volume measurement, pierced by a circular roof opening to connect it to the sky. The architects tried to create a peaceful atmosphere through natural, earthy tones, while a series of multiple voids in the house aroused the interest and curiosity of the residents. The interior and exterior of the space are covered with homogeneous washed stone, blurring the boundaries and allowing a seamless transition between them.

Atelier bua transformed a dilapidated barn in Iceland into an artist's studio and residence. The renovation called "hloduberg artist studio" originated from the existing concrete structure, maintaining cohesion with the fragmented buildings in the area. As part of the remaining walls were too fragile to be reused, the architect kept them in their original state and added a lightweight two-story wooden structure inside.
